Fire ants??

I have this image in my mind that won't go away..tiny 6-legged creepy-
crawlies with antennas scurrying about clutching matches and
muttering, 'Fire..fire..." ((heh, heh, heh)) Yep, once apon a time I
watched some Beavis and Butthead episodes.

LOL!

Fire ants are a South American variety that invaded the American
southland, starting in Mobile, AL. They have very painful bites and
will swarm and attack. When I lived in Houston, TX, we had a couple
hills in our backyard. We gave them a wide birth (sp?) until my
housemate/landlord zapped them with some nasty stuff.

A couple of hills? A COUPLE of HILLS???? LOL.

I live in south Louisiana. I have a couple of fire-ant hills in
every square FOOT of my lawn! We've spent about $500 so far this
year fighting them on about 8 acres. It's a losing battle - for US,
not the ants...

But one adapts to anything. Come visit me and I'll teach you the
trick - you just don't ever stand still in one place. Neigbors
visiting at the fence look to all the world like a group of 3 year-
olds dancing about needing to pee.

Then, there are the banana spiders - harmless but mucho creepy. You
haven't truly freaked until you've driven your golf cart through a
web about 4 feet in diameter strung between two trees - containing a
spider the size of a jumbo shrimp...

And the phantom yellow jackets that dive-bomb me invisibly at a
certain spot on my driveway when I go to get the mail, leaving a
wound that lasts for weeks (on me, at least) that looks like my
spouse beat me with a rubber hose.

Mosquitos with West Nile, ticks with Lyme, armadillos that carry
leprosy, pygmy rattlers, copperheads, cottonmouth mocassins, - I
could plant a whole series of boxes in my own back yard called "The
1001 Louisiana Creepy-Crawlies."

Happy hunting,
Zed

No nutria at the ole home place, but my "Big Bang in a Little Box"
is just across the road from a nest of nutria that swim in the
Capitol Lake. I've seen them swimming right where I park about half
the time I check on the box...

Well I hope to place my first series of 5 boxes this weekend. Hope to
have the clues out soon after. The series is called "The Night
Creatures".

Actually that is a misconception about the "Daddy Long legs". That
spider is one of the most poisonous spiders there is. One bite from
this spider could kill a human BUT alas the fangs of the spider are so
small that they are basically un-useable.

Zed,

How could you forget my favorite Louisiana creepy crawly--the flying
coakroach! Some people call them palmetto bugs but there's no
palmetto in LA... Four inch long cockroach that flies at your
head... Sheesh...

Then there's those geckos that come out at night with the
transparent skin that their guts show through...

I'm so glad we moved from Baton Rouge to Western North Carolina.
Though I do miss the Cajun food...

Actually, there IS palmetto in Louisiana. Along I-10 south of Baton
Rouge, the woods are full of it. And the Bluebonnet swamp here in BR
has it too. Also, all along Burbank south of LSU. Hmmmm, I feel a
stamp coming on...

EEEWWW - don't even mention those bugs. I've killed 3 in my house
this week. They come inside looking for water during the drought
we've had.

I don't have the geckos - my cats kill them.

Happy hunting in NC,
